NSA position over QKD
Quantum Key Distribution is a technology that aims to use quantum properties to secure key distribution. The degree of maturity of this technology is not sufficient yet to be used for the protection of classified information.
- QKD technology is not mature enough yet and faces security issues which may lead to serious security breaches.
- QKD technology seeks to solve a problem that can be solved in a more secure and cheaper way by using other more mature technologies.
For those reasons, at this moment, the Belgian NSA does not endorse the use of QKD for the protection of classified information in any way and recommends NOT TO deploy QKD.
We, however, recommend to pursue efforts in the research, development and deployment of Post-Quantum Cryptography.
Several other countries have made similar statements about QKD. See for example the joint declaration of France, Netherlands, Germany and Sweden. And declaration of US here and UK here. Belgian NSA shares the same view regarding the arguments developed in these respective positions.
